Vertical Lathe’s Hydrostatic Rams Contribute to Better Finishes

Fives Giddings & Lewis is displaying the V 1600, a mid-range, 1,600-mm-table vertical lathe from the V series product line. The V-series machines offer chucks ranging in size from 800 to 2,500 mm and are said to maintain traditional structure elements while enhancing productivity.

V-series turning centers feature hydrostatic rams and adjustable cross rails said to enhance rigidity for heavy, chatter-free cutting and improved part surface finish. The adjustable cross rail is a programmable positioning axis enabling machine programmers to minimize ram extension while optimizing tool position, increasing stiffness and metal removal capabilities. Dual-scale feedback is said to deliver positioning precision and ensure parallelism while the hydraulic cylinder elevation and the clamping system adds 1,000 kN (225,000 lb) of mechanical clamping force per side.
