Metal Spinning’s Role in Modern Manufacturing

As highlighted in ScienceDirect’s article “A review of spinning, shear forming and flow forming processes,” metal spinning has re-emerged as a highly valuable process in today’s push for lightweight, near net shape manufacturing. Once overshadowed by deep drawing and other forming techniques, spinning is seeing renewed interest due to its unique benefits, including reduced tooling costs, lower forming loads, and the ability to create strong, thin-walled components with complex shapes. 

Metal spinning transforms flat sheet metal blanks into symmetrical hollow parts by applying a localized force through a rotating tool against a mandrel. The controlled deformation and relatively simple tooling involved result in lower production costs and high-quality surface finishes. Historically used for products like pots, kettles, and trophies, spinning required significant operator skill and was seen more as a craft than a science.
